Better Beginnings

When children are removed from a home by the Department of Social Services, it’s a traumatic event, on top of circumstances that are often horrific for the child. When this happens, the child’s belongings are often collected in a trash bag, or whatever is handy. That’s where Better Beginnings comes in – providing duffel bags that children can use to collect their belongings with dignity.

Schneider Construction, LLC partners with the Norfolk Department of Social Services and other local businesses each spring for our Better Beginnings campaign. We collect new and gently used duffel bags. The bags will be stocked with an initial collection of toiletry items and tagged as suitable for a boy or a girl, at the appropriate age range. All Better Beginnings bags will be stuffed, tagged and delivered to the Norfolk Department of Social Services for use in the community.

If you would like to make a monetary donation to the campaign, you may Make checks payable to the Norfolk Department of Social Services – Foster Care and drop them off at our office. Please put “Better Beginnings” in the memo area of the check.

Did You Know?

A few facts about the need for foster care:

  • Each year more than three million children are suspected victims of child abuse. More than 500,000 children are in the foster care system in the US.
  • Children in foster care leave behind their neighborhoods, schools, friends and belongings. Many feel anxious and helpless.
  • Peers often tease children in foster care, reinforcing perceptions that they are somehow to blame for their situation.
  • 54% of children in foster care were neglected; 22% were physically abused and 8% were sexually abused.
